The Central Railway (CR) is one of the 17 zones of the Indian Railways. It is headquartered in Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai. This includes India’s first passenger train from Bombay to Thane on April 16, 1853. The Central Railway covers most of the state of Maharashtra, a small part of southern Madhya Pradesh and northeastern Karnataka. The Railway Zone On November 5, 1951, a group of several government-owned railways were formed. The Central Railway Zone used to cover large parts of Madhya Pradesh and part of southern Uttar Pradesh, making it the largest railway zone in India in terms of area, track mileage and staff. These areas became the new West Central Railway Zone in April 2003. It is organized into five sections namely Mumbai CST, Pusawal, Nagpur, Solapur and Pune.
