UGC invites applications for ODL and online programmes On October 1, the University Grants Commission (UGC) released an official notification, calling on higher education institutions to apply to offer open and distance learning (ODL) and online programmes. The initiative aims to expand access to quality education across the country through accessible online platforms, providing more flexible learning opportunities to students.
As per the notification, only institutions ranked among the top 100 in the university category of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) are eligible to launch fully online programmes without seeking prior approval from the UGC. These institutions must also have been ranked at least twice in the last three NIRF cycles, to ensure that only high-performing universities can freely offer these online courses.

Higher Education Institutions Granted Approval for New Programs:
Higher educational institutions (HEIs) can now start up to three undergraduate programmes and ten postgraduate programmes by obtaining approval from their statutory authorities. This approval is applicable for the academic session 2020-2021, provided the institutions meet the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking requirements. Institutions wishing to start more than the prescribed number of programmes will have to seek prior permission from the UGC before proceeding.

Additionally, higher education institutions were required to submit their applications, required details and an affidavit to the UGC, with the application window open till October 15, 2020. In another important update, the UGC has extended the thesis submission deadline for MPhil and PhD students due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. UGC Extends Thesis Submission Deadline and Opens Applications for New Programs
